It was a heavyweight battle between the UPSHOT League’s top two teams Friday night, but ultimately the Crown came up just short in a 100-98 road loss to the Waves.

The narrow defeat snapped a staggering six-game winning streak for Charlotte.

It was a back-and-forth battle across the entire game, with an early lead for Charlotte erased by the Waves, who would carry a lead of their own into halftime. The visitors battled back, however, and clutch plays down the stretch from leading scorer Deja Kelly pulled the Crown within three in the waning seconds of the game.

Charlotte’s final attempt was thwarted, though, and time would expire on the team’s first loss since June 3.
